International students

If you are going to study in the Netherlands, you will of course need a room. There is a major housing shortage in the Netherlands, especially in the big cities. It is therefore important that you start your search on time.

There are several ways to get a room as an international student:

1. Housing through your university (University Housing)

In most cases you can find accommodation through the university where you will study in the Netherlands. Please note that there are often not enough rooms to accommodate everyone. Universities offer housing through various partners, both commercial and social housing corporations, including DUWO.

Characteristics of University Housing

• Furnished
• Guaranteed (with timely registration)
• Fixed start and end date (usually max. 1 year)

2. Looking for housing yourself

The second option is to look for accommodation yourself. You have the choice between commercial parties and social housing. Social housing usually offers better rates and rental conditions.

You can also search via social media. Facebook in particular has several local pages for finding housing. For example, try: 'housing [city]', 'room [city]' or 'room wanted [city]'.

Register at ROOM.nl

Most social housing advertisements can be found on Roommatch.nl. Register on ROOM.nl as soon as possible. This costs a one-off fee of € 35 (2023 price level) and gives you a registration for 8 years.

Characteristics of housing via Roommatch.nl

• Upholstered (non-furnished)
• No guarantee that you will find a place in time
• Contract for an indefinite period (until the end of your studies or when you cancel yourself)
