80 rooms in a beautiful monument, in the heart of Amsterdam!

The Oudemanhuispoort, a beautiful historic building in the center, previously housed the law faculty of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Currently, part of it is still used for educational purposes. The university recently decided to temporarily earmark the remaining part for student housing. Thanks to the environmental permit that has now been granted, DUWO has now started converting it into student rooms. From 2021, the complex will be renovated again and occupied by the university again.

The monumental building is in a beautiful location, in the heart of Amsterdam on the canal. Everything that makes city life fun can be found in the immediate vicinity: cafes, restaurants, shops, theater and cinema. The vibrant heart of the Netherlands.

The 80 rooms have different surfaces, from 10 to 44 square meters. These will be affordable student rooms, with an average rent of 340 euros excluding service costs. The rent obviously depends on the size of the rooms. There will be communal sanitary facilities and communal kitchens.

In addition to the UvA, other educational institutions are within walking distance or easily accessible by public transport. Tram and metro lines in the area, both the East Line and the newly opened North-South Line, have stations nearby.

History

In 1880 the buildings were put into use by the University of Amsterdam. In 1891, an auditorium was added to the complex. In 1920, a major renovation of some of the buildings began. In 1927 a new building for the university was completed, designed by P.L. Marnette. This part of the complex, which includes lecture halls, is accessible from the courtyard. The new facade on the Kloveniersburgwal in particular shows characteristics of the Amsterdam School and has earned this part the nickname "the skate".

Since 1960, the building has been thoroughly renovated under the supervision of architects J. Leupen and H. in 't Hoen. Among other things, new lecture halls were added, for which the auditorium from 1891 was demolished. In 1998, a master plan was drawn up for future use by the architect Francine Houben, from Mecanoo.

Houses

It is a monumental building. You are not allowed to drill or nail in the rooms. They are all non-self-contained homes where you share the shower, toilet and kitchen with several people. How many people you share the facilities with depends on the unit. This number varies. There are units from 19 to 27 people

Because it is an old charming educational building that is temporarily used for student housing, a number of facilities are not as we normally have in our student housing. There will be restrictions on how many electrical appliances you can use and you won't be able to shower indefinitely. More information about this will follow. If you don't mind, the Oudemanhuispoort offers you the opportunity to live temporarily in a very special place in the heart of Amsterdam.
